Thank you everyone for participating in the digital final of Hacking Higher Education Finland 2020! If you missed the streamed final or would like to relive the experience, stay tuned. The recorded final and the pitch videos of our finalists will be published soon.
HHE Finland is a competition to highlight initiatives that have improved the operations of a higher education institution or higher education in general. It is a chance for anyone contributing to the field to not only strengthen their image but also learn from others. A jury selected 10 finalists based on the submission forms to pitch their solution to a wide audience and compete for their votes.
And yes, you got it right, the final winner is selected by the public and the winner is nominated as
Higher Education Developer of the Year!
Check out this year's amazing finalists here!
The evaluation criteria
Identifying a valid problem/challenge
How well or accurately a problem or challenge behind the solution has been identified? "Is this a real problem and by solving it we can take higher education to a new level?" Effectiveness of the solution How well does the solution respond to the challenge and how accurate the solution is? What kind of benefits can the solution bring and for who? Does the solution have societal impact and if so what kind? |
Novelty of the solution
Is there similar solutions existing already, what is the innovative or novel aspect of the solution? Scalability of the solution How easily can the solution be brought to live and how widely it could be utilized (how many can benefit from it)? |
What does the winner get?
The winner of Hacking Higher Education is announced as the Higher Education Developer of the Year.
All finalist institutions become members of HEIP, Higher Education Innovation Partners, until eternity. This membership comes with chances for development, training, webinars and networking events as well as other potential perks. All finalists will also get an access to a solution database for 12 months including all solutions and contact information to their owners for easy collaboration.
While the winner gets maximized visibility, all finalists experience significant growth in awareness. Before the festival, they are lifted on the social media channels of both HEIP and Dare to Learn which together reach over 150 000 people worldwide. They are also presented on Dare to Learn website which has thousands of visitors on monthly basis.

Congratulations to the
HIGHER EDUCATION DEVELOPER OF THE YEAR 2020:
Elixar Systems Augmented Reality
Challenge: Students in the present education system can't experience the experimental aspect of science. Moreover the students do not explore the experimental aspect of learning due to no availability of complex hardware setup requirements. Even in the structured practical lab sessions by school and colleges the students hardly experience the logic and importance of observation.
Solution: An Augmented Reality based mobile application, which enables students to have full scientific experiment experience based on correct mathematical coding just anywhere. More than 60 scientific experiments are incorporated in the AR(Augmented Reality) application. This allows students to conduct lab sessions remotely, and gives opportunity for schools with insufficient funding to provide experimental lab work.
Next steps: We have built a web based platform where schools can sign in and conduct AR lab sessions in physics, chemistry and biology. In the near future we will not only add quantitatively to the present infrastructure, but also add interesting and never before explored areas like experimental aspects of astronomy and geography. We want to build an AR ecosystem where students can learn both with and about AR and deploy their scientific thought experiments on our platform.

Hacking Higher Education Finland enablers 2019
Congratulations to the first
HIGHER EDUCATION DEVELOPER OF THE YEAR
from 2019:
Bazaar
Challenge / need: What if we would embrace the competence and potential value of our partners, stakeholders and community more, and take the collaboration to a whole new level? What if we would turn the versatile data, information and competence base of our university community and our external society into richer, more sustainable and more impactful learning and collaboration opportunities? What if we would offer a digital platform to support all this, and even more?
Solution: Bazaar concept integrates the alumni to the university community, enables more streamlined and automated matchmaking to build competence, to take on challenges, to create new business opportunities, to co-create and to co-innovate. Bazaar also enables enriching the learning offering through enabling 3rd parties to offer their competence as trusted members of the Bazaar-community.
The platform includes the following features:
Alumni Session and Collaboration Pass
Matchmaking tool
Marketplace
Next steps: This solution is in the first stage of development and will be built one block at a time. First, we will complete the proof of concept, then, create a minimum viable product. This is an agile and iterative design process that includes much testing, validation, and engagement of key stakeholders.
